Ants as Bioindicators of Riparian Ecological Health in Catalonian Rivers

چکیده

In this study, we assess the potential of ants as bioindicators riparian ecological health in two river types (upland and lowland type) located Catalonian region. We proposed to understand what extent do metrics based on ant responses provide useful information that cannot be presented by traditional biophysical assessments while attempting an approach creating ant-based multimetric index (ant-based MMI) health. A total 22 species were identified, 42 related foraging activity, richness, functional traits evaluated core index. Riparian features proximal land use cover (LULC) used distinguish disturbed from less sites. found communities strongly responded human disturbance. When compared with exclusively physical-based for assessment health, MMI was more sensitive disturbance, also reacting effects surrounding LULC pressure. This study provides a preliminary tool evaluate corridors although additional research is required include other wider stressor gradient before application.

Using Ants as bioindicators: Multiscale Issues in Ant Community Ecology

Ecological patterns and processes are characteristically scale dependent, and research findings often cannot be translated easily from one scale to another. Conservation biology is challenged by a lack of congruence between the spatial scales of ecological research (typically involving small plots) and land management (typically involving whole landscapes). Here, I discuss spatial scaling issue...

Aquatic macrophytes as bioindicators of carbon dioxide in groundwater fed rivers.

Aquatic plants have been used as hydrological tracers in groundwater fed river systems. In nature, patterns in plant distribution have been attributed to ammonium (NH(4)) toxicity and phosphate (PO(4)) limitation, while some laboratory studies have focused on the role of the partial pressure of CO(2) (pCO(2)). The aims of this study were (i) to test whether plant distribution was more related t...

Synanthropic Ants as Vectors of Pathogens in Hospitals of Iran

Background: Synanthropic ants can transmit pathogens especially in hospital environments,  but this fact had not been confirmed in Palaearctic region. This is the first study on confirming this ability of ants in this region. Methods: Three hospitals of Bandar Abbas, Iran have been selected for monthly sampling of ants in their various wards. The main processe...

GeoBioScience: Red Wood Ants as Bioindicators for Active Tectonic Fault Systems in the West Eifel (Germany)

In a 1.140 km² study area of the volcanic West Eifel, a comprehensive investigation established the correlation between red wood ant mound (RWA; Formica rufa-group) sites and active tectonic faults. The current stress field with a NW-SE-trending main stress direction opens pathways for geogenic gases and potential magmas following the same orientation. At the same time, Variscan and Mesozoic fa...
